Under Armour Care & Washing Instructions
For a general guideline on how to wash sports apparel, please see Vapor Fresh's General Guidelines for Washing Sports Apparel.
Under Armour-- it helps you PROTECT THIS HOUSE, but are you returning the favor by washing yours properly? If you haven’t seen Under Armour’s care instructions yet, they’re on the tags of your specific items of clothing and on their website here. They list very basic care instructions, including--
- Machine wash in cold water with like colors
- Hang dry if possible, tumble dry low if necessary
- Do not use bleach, fabric softeners or dryer sheets
- Do not iron
Here are some additional tips to get the most out of your Under Armour--
Do Not Wash Under Armour With Denims, Towels Or Things With Zippers
Do NOT wash Under Armour in the same load with clothing that contains zippers. Zippers can rub against your Under Armour during the wash cycle and cause fraying, ripping, and pilling. This will reduce the life of your Under Armour. Keep your Under Armour as good as new by avoiding washing them with other pieces of clothing that have zippers. If your Under Armour has a zipper, make sure it’s completely zipped up so it doesn’t destroy itself.
Do NOT wash Under Armour with towels and denims in the same load. Rougher fabrics such as towels and denims can rub against your performance apparel in the wash in a very abrasive manner and cause fraying, ripping and pilling of your Under Armour. Avoid this and extend the life of your Under Armour by washing them separately from towels, denims and other rougher fabrics.
Use A Detergent Specifically Meant To Wash Activewear
Under Armour is a very high quality product, so what would cause it to deteriorate over time? The usual culprit is an incompatible laundry detergent, which can cause a number of issues such as lingering odors and loss of wicking properties. By using a high performance free & clear detergent, you can completely avoid these issues and extend the useful life of your Under Armour.
Here’s what you should look for in a detergent to wash your Under Armour--
Use A Detergent Meant For Cold Water. Under Armour recommends using a cold wash on almost all of their products, so be sure to use a detergent that’s meant for a cold wash. Using a cold-wash cycle is also eco-friendly as it uses less energy and resources!
Powder Laundry Detergents Are Preferred. Nike Dri-Fit, a similar product, recommends using a powder detergent because they remove soils and debris much more effectively than liquid detergents, all without leaving behind any residue that can deteriorate your Under Armour.
Avoid Optical Brighteners, Softeners & Fragrances. Under Armour specifically recommends avoiding detergents with fabric softeners, but you should also avoid optical brighteners and fragrances for the same reason-- they leave a residue on the fabric that clogs the pores of the material, causing lingering odors and a rough texture. Plus, if you’re artificially making your clothes appear brighter and smell different, how sure can you be sure that your clothes are actually getting a true, complete clean? Free & Clear laundry detergents that are free from these chemicals are your best bet when choosing a detergent to wash your sports apparel.
